Rolex reference 126729VTNR is a genuine GMT-Master II made in 18 ct white gold. Calling a visually similar replica “white gold” or saying it contains the same movement without evidence confuses the original specification with the product being sold. This guide establishes the genuine benchmark and then lists the claims that need separate verification.
The genuine reference in brief
Rolex describes reference 126729VTNR as a 40 mm GMT-Master II with a white-gold case and Oyster bracelet, a green ceramic dial and a green-and-black Cerachrom 24-hour bezel. It uses manufacture calibre 3285, with an independently adjustable local-hour hand and an approximate 70-hour power reserve. Rolex rates the genuine case to 100 metres.
Those details can be checked on the official Rolex reference page. They describe the original watch only.
Why “cheap white gold” is a warning sign
White gold is not a colour description. It is a precious-metal alloy with a different density, value and finishing process from steel. A replica may use polished steel, plating or a coating to imitate the appearance. Unless a listing provides reliable material evidence, it should be described by its actual construction rather than by the original Rolex material.
Weight can provide a clue but is not proof on its own. Bracelet resizing, internal weights and other components can change the result.
The green ceramic dial and bezel
The dial is an unusually important part of this reference because the green ceramic surface reacts differently to light from lacquer or painted metal. Comparison photographs should use similar lighting and exposure; otherwise colour can be misleading.
On the bezel, examine the boundary between green and black, the depth and fill of the numerals, the triangle at 24, surface gloss and alignment with the dial. The bezel should be assessed as a functional 24-hour component, not only as a colour match.
Movement and GMT function
Calibre 3285 is a Rolex movement. A replica movement may imitate its appearance or use “3285” as a seller label without sharing the same architecture. Ask how the local hour, 24-hour hand and date are adjusted. A caller GMT, office GMT and decorative 24-hour hand do not provide the same operation.
The genuine movement specification also cannot be used as evidence that a replica has a 70-hour reserve, Rolex precision or the same resistance to shocks and magnetism. Test the actual watch.
A concise comparison checklist
- Actual case and bracelet material, stated without borrowing the genuine specification.
- Measured case diameter, thickness and total weight.
- Dial material and colour under neutral light.
- Bezel colour split, engraving, fill and alignment.
- Hand stack and independent-hour adjustment.
- Date alignment and magnification.
- Named movement, measured frequency and serviceability.
- Individual pressure-test result before water exposure.
Use the reference as a benchmark, not a borrowed specification
Reference 126729VTNR gives a clear design target: white gold, green ceramic, a two-colour bezel and a true GMT movement. A replica should be evaluated on how it interprets those elements and on its own disclosed components. It should not inherit the Rolex material, calibre or warranty through wording alone.
